Sherman Heights is a high-density urban neighborhood that developed on land purchased by Mathew Sherman in 1867. Through the booming 1880s, Sherman Heights was a vibrant middle class neighborhood that served as the first "suburb" next to downtown San Diego. (In 1887 the beautiful Villa Montezuma was built as home for world traveler Jesse Shepard, a noted spiritualist and pianist.) From the turn of the last century until today, Sherman Heights welcomed waves of newcomers to town: German-Americans through the 1920s, Japanese-Americans through the 1940s, African-Americans through the 1970s, and Mexican-Americans up to today.
